Dark lines around porcelain crowns could be a common cause of esthetic failure of a crown. A number of times patients choosing porcelain fused to metal crown (also called PFM crown or metal ceramic crown) may come across this problem.
Basically this could happen because of three reasons:
- PFM crowns: The older alternative to full ceramic crowns were Porcelain fused to Metal (PFM/Metal ceramic crowns) wherein a layer of ceramic was fired on a metal substructure that provided strength and fracture resistance to the overlying porcelain. In these crowns, the ceramic gets thinner and thinner as it nears the gum line and the dark metal outline could be exposed when the gums recede over a period of time.
- Faulty design of the Porcelain Restoration: Errors in designing of the crown for eg: Step Formation at the margin of the prosthesis where the margins of the crown do not flush with the tooth structure, may cause persistent food lodgement in the area thus leading to darkening and staining over time. This may lead to damage to the underlying tooth by decay and gum infection.
- Use of Cheap and non precious Metal: Older crowns which might have used non precious metal alloys for fabrication of metal substructure may sometimes cause the metals to leach out and eventually stain the gums surrounding the crown. Non precious metals have also been known to cause allergies in some patients.
At Dr Bari Dental, we are equipped to provide various services that will prove useful in treating these complaints include:
- Replacing the old Metal ceramic crown (PFM crown) with Full ceramic crowns
- Replacing old prosthesis with new biocompatible ones
- Eliminating risks of further development of dark lines by redesigning crowns to enable maintenance of proper oral hygiene
Modern Full Ceramic crowns guarantee dual advantages of high strength and superior esthetics than their older counterparts. Call our clinic and schedule an appointment to know more.
